Mizaru, Iwazaru and Kikazaru first originated in the Muromachi period (1300-1500's) as stone carvings above Tosho-gu shrine, Nikko, Japan
The philosophy behind the Three Wise Monkeys is thought to have originally come from Buddhist teachings in China
The monkeys symbolise the importance of what we perceive and express. They are a reminder to be mindful of what we take in from the world and what we put out into it
Jayne has created this work as a visual antithesis to the original maxim. The monkeys now live in the 21st century where society is obsessed with content, analysing, voicing it's opinion on practically everything and labelling all that is humanely possible.
